Egilsstadir– Iceland –9 days / 8 nights / 6 riding days, Reykjavik - Akureyri - Thorljotsstadir - Skatastadir - Egilsa - ReykjavikNorthern Odyssey, a riding tour from the Skagafjördur district with long tradition in horse breeding to Laugafell, with natural hot pool and green vegetation, a true oasis for those following the old Sprengisandur Trail. Ride close to the majestic glacier Hofsjökull; enjoy the peaceful Austurdalur valley and Abær countryside church, and Merkigil canyon. This tour combines the fascinating and varied wilderness of North Iceland with historical sites.

We recommend ending your tour with a stay at the Northern Light Inn, ideally nestled into the lava fields at the Blue Lagoon. Visit the Blue Lagoon in the evening and/or the following morning prior to your afternoon departure from the Keflavik Airport.

Day 1 ARRIVAL KEFLAVIK - REYKJAVIK Sunday
Individual transfer from Keflavik Airport to Hotel Cabin (included in price). Pick up at included hotel at 18:00. Welcome meeting at 18:30. Overnight at your hotel.

Day 2 REYKJAVIK - EGILSSTADIR - GLUMSSTADIR - NORDURDALUR (B, L, D) Monday
Early breakfast at the hotel at 06:15. Departure from the hotel at 06:45 in the morning for the domestic flight to Egilsstadir. Please dress already in riding clothes and bring your passport or other identification for your domestic flight. Flight to Egilsstadir village and a drive to Glumsstadir Farm where we meet horses and staff. After a short introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gaits we start our ride alongside Jökulsa a Fljotsdal and into the Fljotsdalur countryside. We finish the ride at the round up place at Skridufell Farm and stay overnight at cozy Fljotsdalsgrund guesthouse. (23 km/14mi)

Day 3 SKRIDUKLAUSTUR - FJALLASKARD CABIN (B, L, D) Tuesday
We ascend from a valley at nearly sea level to the great highland plateau, riding into the largest uninhabited area in North Europe. Enjoy magnificent view on this ride where vegetation and landscape have already an arctic character. We stay overnight at the newly renovated mountain cabin Fjallaskard, at the foot of Mt. Eyvindarfjöll. (40 km/25mi)

Day 4 FJALLASKARD - VADBREKKA - HAFRAHVAMMAGLJUFUR (B, L, D) Wednesday
We ride from Fjallaskard mountain cabin to Hrafnkelsdalur valley. In this area the famous Hrafnkelssaga took place during the Viking Ages. We change horses at Vadbrekka farm and ride to the gigantic canyon Hafrahvammagljufur. This huge, narrow, steep canyon is an unforgettable sight and without doubt one of the highlights of the tour. We stay overnight at the farm Vadbrekka.

Day 5 VADBREKKA - LAUGARFELL MOUNTAIN CABIN (B, L, D) Thursday
Enjoy far-reaching views over Iceland's rugged interior, when we ride close to the fertile landscape of Vestur-Öræfi. Also during today's ride we enjoy the view of Mt. Snæfell towering above the area, located in the largest National Park in Europe. Get a glimpse of this impressive mountain from an ever changing angle. We follow good riding tracks while we ride towards the new and spacious mountain cabin at Laugarfell. Relax in the natural hot springs. (30 km/19mi)

Optional (available at an extra charge): In the afternoon we change to a 4Wheel-drive transportation and drive to Vatnajökull glacier. View endless stretches of ice and snow, smell, feel and touch the ice. Vatnajökull is the largest ice cap in Europe and covers 8.100 km². Seven volcanoes are hidden underneath. Experiencing the majestic glacier up-close is a truly thrilling experience.

Day 6 LAUGARFELL - JOKULSA RIVER - FLJOTSDALSGRUND (B, L, D) Friday
View thousands of wild geese gracing at Eyjabakkar plateau and beautiful waterfalls in the glacier-fed river Jökulsa in Fljotsdalur as we descend through Nordurdalur valley.We stay overnight at Fljotsdalsgrund. (35 km/22mi)

Day 7 VALTHJOFSSTADUR - SUDURDALUR - FLJOTSDALSGRUND (B, L, D) Saturday
We follow Nordurdalur valley to Valthjofsstadur where the first church was built in the 14th century. Here we leave the herd behind and ride on individual horses into Sudurdalur valley, following the river banks. We cross Keldua River and return to our herd for the last portion of our ride back to Glumsstadir. Here we are near Lake Lögurinn, where "Loch Ness brother" has been seen. Overnight at Fljotsdalsgrund.(35 km/22mi)

Day 8 FLJOTSDALSGRUND - EGILSSTADIR - REYKJAVIK (B) Sunday
After breakfast we fly back to Reykjavík in the morning with arrival at approx.12:00 at Reykjavík Domestic Airport. Overnight stay at your hotel in the Capital area.

Day 9 REYKJAVIK DEPARTURE (B) Monday
Transfer by bus to Keflavik Airport in time for the return flight home.
