We will enjoy the day at Thingvellir National Park, site of the oldest parliament in the world, established in established in 930. We visit the visitor's centre, where we will get a great tour about the remarkable history of Thingvellir, as well as the geologic history of the surrounding area. After a walk down to the site of the old parliament we will meet up with our horses and enjoy a 4-hour ride in the park, which gives us a better feel for the atmosphere of the site as the Vikings experienced it. The horses will spend the night at Skogarholar as we will head back to Lake Laugavatn and spend the night there, with Fontana Spa waiting for us. (20 km/12 mi)

We will leave Thingvellir and head towards Skorradalur valley in the western part of Iceland. The route we will be traveling was used by many people in the old days visiting the old parliament at Thingvellir. This is the route that Snorri Sturlusson, the author of many of the Icelandic Sagas, used on many occasions.

The scenery is beautiful as we should get a glimpse of the Langjökull glacier as well as the volcano Skaldbreidur. We leave our horses in the green valley of Skorradalur at the Fitjar farm, which has a very small church, build in 1897. We will be spending the night at the guesthouse Milli vina, and enjoy the hot tub and a game of pool for those who are interested. (40 km/25 mi)

Day 5 FITJAR - LITLA DRAGEYRI (B, L, D) Thursday
Today we will combine sightseeing and riding. We start the day by discover the most interesting places in Borgarfjördur by bus. This will include Barnafossar waterfalls, Reykholt, the home of Snorri Sturlusson and Deildartunguhver, which is the hot spring that produces the most hot water in Europe.

It is said that Snorri Sturlusson wrote the Saga of Egill Skallagrimsson. We visit a green house where the farmers grow vegetables all year round by using the geothermal resources available in the area. We will buy fresh vegetables for our dinner.

After our sightseeing tour we head over to Fitjar for an afternoon ride from Fitjar to the deserted farm, Litla Drageyri. We ride along the shore of Lake Skorradalur, longest lake in Iceland and through Monastery forest, which has been protected by the ministry of environmental affairs, due to the fact that it is one of the few " forests" that resembles the original forests in Iceland. We leave our horses at Litla Drageyri and head back to the comfort of Milli Vina, where the hot tub will be waiting. (20 km/12 mi)

After a good breakfast and a short discussion about the trail be will be traveling today, we will head up to Litla Drageyri to meet up with our horses. Today we will be riding through the countryside of Borgarfjördur. On our way we will stop at Midfossar, a riding facility used by the Agriculture University at Hvanneyri. There we will get a quick lecture off the studying of horsemanship they offer there. From here we will head down to the glacier river of Hvita, crossing the river on the oldest bridge.

If the tide is right, we will ride down the river banks towards the stables in Borgarnes, where we will part with our horses. On our way to Reykjavik, we will stop at Borg a Myrum, the birth place of Egill Skallagrimsson, where we will hear a few stories about his youth and how he earned his reputation as the craziest Vikings that has ever lived. (30 km/19 mi)
